Restrictions increase for toddlers because they can cause so much damage to themselves and others while having no sense of consequences. Toddlers are cuddlers and biters and grabbers just to see what it feels like to cuddle, bite, and grab. As they follow their impulses, they are learning the consequences of their actions.

Toddlers are subject to the conscious or unconscious thought: “I wonder what would happen if I…? What if I touched it, how would it feel? What if I cuddled it? What if I pushed it off the table? What if I banged it on the floor? What if I banged it on Daddy’s face? What if I bit it? What if I hit it with something hard? What if I put it through this hole?”

Give them something to feel, cuddle, push off the table, bang on the floor, bite, or stick in a hole. There’s pretty much a toy available for every one of these “what ifs.” There are books like Pat the Bunny, where different textures, ranging from sandpaper to fur, can be felt through a hole in the page. There are rubber teething rings to bite, and toys with holes of different shapes to put pegs of matching shapes through—over and over and over. These toys have been around for generations, but the same kinds of toys with updated motifs are being offered anew.

Don’t forget what may be the world’s best toy: a big cardboard box. A toddler will push it around on the rug, then knock it over and crawl in one end or over the top. He will drop a toy in first, hang over the edge and dive in after it, and then sit up, lie down, and throw the toy out. He will do it without help or attention, but he really likes you to watch him problem-solve as he revels in his skills. When the sides of the box finally break down, he will drag it around. Then he will use the flat cardboard as his special space to sit on. Several Elements of Interest will be satisfied with this one ubiquitous toy.
